Relian part 08 final... "Yeah, but that was Myrtia, and these are her books. If she can't keep cool when doing magic then I don't know who can. She trusts her magic and she's very powerful."
"Well, compared to any of us she is."
"What is power in magic then? The amount you have, or your control over it?"
"Control, definitely control." Gebb said. Wren didn't answer immediately, but Myrtia heard them and was glad that Gebb did not consider the smaller power she controlled to be a set back, and that she understood the importance of control after a few days. "If you have a lot of power you need to be able to control it, otherwise you'll get hurt. But if you have a little bit of power, then you need to use control to wield it to the best of your abilities. Makes sense."
"Actually I think it's a bit of both." Wren said finally, looking questioningly at Gebb who only asked, "Yes, but which is most useful?"
"That depends on the situation doesn't it." Gebb rolled her eyes.
"Trust you to twist everything

A rumbling cough sounded through the silence and the creature beside him looked up at him and continued walking. He hadn't turned at the sudden mist, and seemed completely unfazed by it.
"This... way." He said, his voice cracking and the words coming slowly to his mouth. The sounds he made were more animal like than Theram remembered him speaking with earlier. It seemed like the magic was finally wearing off. Together they walked into the dense vapours and the light changed as they entered. The mist was bright, reflecting the light from Theram's magic so that they were almost blinded. Theram allowed it to dim and the fog dimmed also. They stood in darkness again, and continued one walking, one plodding along, hitting trees and stunned, stepping back, and going around them. Theram began to walk with one hand outstretched and did not bother to use his magic. He'd become s

Several of the builders had disappeared, but now they came back arms full of bowls and one carrying a large blackened cooking pot and ladle. They set them down and called everyone to a stop. Quinn rubbed her eyes with one hand a yawned slightly, turning round to face Lysander. He nodded and let her accept the meal she was offered, allowing her to stay for just a bit longer. Every one fell into companionable chatter, rumbling laughter filling the room. Lysander and the magician sat down with them, accepting a bowl and relaxing until they heard the conversation from a little way off.
"So where are you from, Quinn?"
"The city above." Laughter.
"Then what are you doing down here?"
"I want to learn magic."
"Oh really, and you're doing that in a prison How odd."
"No, I'm in prison. There was a misunderstanding." The whole room hushed as mistrust stirred in every mind as all eyes fell on Quinn. She stared at the man's face, not afraid of

On my way back to my trunk, I stole a glance into Gebb's room and saw her curled up on her bed as a wolf, her front paw bandaged and smelling of one of Myrtia's foul plants. Her chest rose and fell irregularly, but she slept at least.
"Gebb? Are you awake?" I had to be sure she was sleeping, and she must have been, because she didn't answer me when I called. Her eyelids stayed closed and she continued breathing slowly, and although I did think of leaving, I entered and shut the door. The room was dark, and only a few magical lights still glittered in the glass sphere that rested on the side of her desk. Sitting down next to her carefully, I managed to keep quiet and not wake her. I moved her gently to sit on my lap, her head resting on me and stroked her back. Her fur was curiously cold, I drew the blankets up around her and she began to warm up. Her breathing became more rhythmical and quite soon, I found that I too had fallen
Relian part 04...I did need that lesson, my lack of care and control of my skills was the cause of my struggle the night before. I noticed that Wren did not appear until later, when second lessons would resume. He was all smiles and courtesy then and constant went to my side as i tried to concentrate on my projects, hissing apologies in my ear like an annoying bug. Myrtia drew him aside and their voices fluctuated through my concentration, eventually they left, still arguing and allowed the rest of the students to get on with their work.
Without Myrtia's instructions and suggestions the pace was slow. No one seemed to be in a mood to work and the productive nature of the library soon dissolved into a bundering mess. I tried to keep my eyes on my pen and paper, but whatever they were talking about crowded round a few desks seemed infinitely more interesting. I noticed an opportunity. With Myrtia busy i could read whatever i wanted and use the library as a source for my own private education. As i lef

"Really? You managed to get out, what, where you on bail or something?" He shook his head.
"No life. Assualt and theft."
"Looks to me old man that those days were long over. You've been rotting in a cell for years, with nothing to look at but your own chart, a calender you've consturucted. Is that right?" He nodded and was silent, and I didn't care that I was frightening. I revelled in it. "And I suppose you don't want to go back?" I scanned him for magic, to see if he did have anything worthwhile to steal, but he was a dried up empty shell. I shook his head violently this time and then clutched at his head, hiding his face in shadows.
"I don't know what you just did. But-ah." His face contorted in pain, his brows drawn together, froehead wrinkled and eyes squinting in the gloom as his breaths were painfully drawn, quick shallow breaths. He wheezed for a few moments be
Relian part 02...round he realised that as he had been urging his comrades on he hadn't been paying attention and had taken the wrong path. He brought himself to a stop with a tremendous effort and paused, searching for the signatures of magic that would tell him were she was. The other guards thundered past him and broke his concentration, he began again but didn't have time to tell them they were running the wrong way. He spun slowly, but the trails of power his own steps had left confused him.
He breathed in and began again, but left out his breath in a long huff almost just as quickly. It was inevitable, they had lost her. Not being one to brood on losses he quickly turned his thoughts on how best to handle the situation. If one apparently untrained magician was able to cause this much mayhem, then the cells all needed to be checked in case they had been compromised. If she had managed to break out of her cell, then there was also a chance that other prisoners had escaped. Panicked, he spun arou
